Free program helps people land banking jobs

BankWork$ is ready to graduate its first class of Phoenix students interested in careers in banking. Many of the participants are low-income or disadvantaged.

BankWork$ was founded a decade ago by Les Biller, a retired chief operating office at Wells Fargo who lives in Seattle. The goal of the program is to help disadvantaged individuals, primarily young adults and people with employment barriers, land jobs in an industry where turnover frequently is high. Funding for the program has come from the Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation and from several large banks, including Wells Fargo, Bank of America and U.S. Bank. The program began in Los Angeles and has gradually spread to Phoenix and a handful of other cities, with the goal of reaching 15 large metro areas within the next few years.
